About Apple Chips

Tree-Treats’ Apple Chips were launched in 2002 following an extensive research process to assist local South Australian Apple growers to preserve their excess Apple crops, reducing wastage and extending the life of their season’s harvest.

The challenge – to develop a revolutionary means to quickly preserve the fruit in its all natural state and maintain a long shelf life, but without deterioration of the nutritional value of the product.

Much scientific research was performed and quite a degree of head scratching!

From this came Tree-Treats rather unique Oven Bake method of preserving whole sliced Apples without the need to add preservatives or chemicals.

Our technologically advanced method of Oven Baking an apple quite simply extracts about 85% of the Apple’s natural weight (nearly all its moisture/water) to leave a crisp chip with a beautiful texture, completely dry, ready for eating.

Apple Chips are great party food ... served plain or slide them onto a Dip Platter. Their crisp taste goes well with virtually all dip flavours.

In fact, so surprising were the results, this farming community quickly realised the newly developed invention to produce Apple Chip was making an exceptionally popular, tasty and healthy snack as an alternative to traditional ‘junk foods’ such as potato chips, with their high salt and fat content. Demand for Apple Chips started to grow rapidly.

Since this discovery, the Tree-Treats team have found other locally grown produce also dries perfectly using the same methods; carrots, cabbage, celery, spinach to name a few (and even ginger). The team has also developed a range of shelf stable diced and sliced apple and pear products which retain the fresh fruit texture and flavour even after extended heat processing. This shelf stable process has been extended to include diced capsicum, tomato and even the humble potato French fry.

Ingredients : Apple, Sugar, Citric acid (with cinnamon, honey or caramel flavours)

Apple Chips are produced from whole apples, sliced and baked dry. Some sugar and citric acid are used in the process to maintain a uniform product throughout a season, as apples are high in acid at the start of the season and more intense in natural sugars at the end of the season. Tree-Treats Apple Chips have the same composition as a mid season fresh whole apple after the removal of water.

At one of Tree-Treats’ recent appearances at the Royal Adelaide Show, we were pleased to receive a glowing recommendation from one of our ‘taste testers’. To quote young Rodney from Clearview, South Australia ... “AWESOME”.

But don’t just take Rodney’s word for it; try some Apple Chips yourself, and let us know what you think.

Our Original flavour Apple Chips are made from Granny Smith apples, while our Flavoured Apple Chips are baked from Golden Delicious apples. Natural products such as pure Honey and Cinnamon are used to flavour these products.

Apple Chips contain no added fat or oil. Also, as in a fresh picked apple, Apple Chips are high in fibre, cholesterol free, nut free, dairy free and gluten free (perfect for Coeliacs).

Apple Chips have 11% natural fibre, which aids in slow release of apples’ sugars to the body, giving a sustained energy boost. Also, over 50% of the vitamins and almost all antioxidants are to found in the skin of apples, hence Tree-Treats Apple Chips are not peeled before drying so as to maximise this goodness.

Oh .. one last thing .. they’re delicious!
